Through a wealth of interviews, film clips, and archival footage, Sono Gassman! reveals how Gassman’s comedic screen persona cannily reflected and critiqued mid-20th-century Italian society, while shedding light on the complex inner life of the man himself.

Venice Film Fest to honor Vittorio Gassman ROME -- The Venice Film Festival said Wednesday it would honor iconic Italian actor Vittorio Gassman with a special tribute on the tenth anniversary of his death. The tribute, which has been rumored in the Italian press for weeks, will get underway with the Sept. 1 world premiere screening of the documentary "Vittorio racconta Gassman" ("Vittorio tells about Gassman"), based on footage of the actor speaking about his career. That date would have been Gassman's 88th birthday. "The film dispels many of the stereotypes about my father," said Alessandro Gassman, a well-known Italian actor in his own right. The younger Gassman helped make the film, which was produced by Giancarlo Scarchilli.

No city in the world has sparked as many desires and fantasies as Venice. In the 18th century, its heady atmosphere of freedom produced an extraordinary cultural flowering. Famous artists like Vivaldi, Tiepolo father and son, Canaletto, Longhi, Guardi, Goldoni and Casanova hurled themselves into a giddy whirl of libertinage while leaving their stamp on the unique city. Then, in 1797, Venice surrendered to Napoleon Bonaparte. Carnival was over, and the masks came off. Venice: Flamboyant to the End transports us from canal to canal, palazzo to palazzo, bathing us in the magical atmosphere of this maze of a city and conjuring up the uniquely flamboyant Venice of the 18th century.

Alessandro Rossi, an Italia air force officer in diplomatic service, is happy with his wife, pilot Bea Rossi, who had a miscarriage and gets obsessed with her child wish when pregnant again of a boy to be christened Vittorio 'winner'. Bea resigns her job and moves in with his caring rural Italian family -mamma Teresa, papa Giuseppe and Bruder Giorgio- while his job keeps him mostly abroad. Bea's domineering mother Martha, who feels deserted, calls her to Berlin gravely ill, but dies before Bea arrives by train. Clearing out the home, where Bea's first love Moritz Wiesner, who cared fro Martha for her sake, rekindles (un-)happy youth memories. Alessandro can't get Bea to leave Berlin, where after unselfishly saving a child in danger she has another miscarriage, but hides it from Alessandro, whom she somehow blames, and resolves not to return without helping herself to a child, in a deranged way, but gets found out
